Day 15: When You Forget // 31 Days of Hope in Brokenness

Hi there! This is day 15 of a series I’m writing this October called 31 Days of Hope in Brokenness. You can find the entire series here: 31 Days of Hope in Brokenness.

Sometimes the storm is too big, and your prayers seem so small.

Sometimes there are moments when you come to the very end of yourself and your sanity, and even your tears.

Sometimes the darkness is so deep you fear you will never make it through this particular struggle in one piece.

Sometimes the brokenness swallows you whole and you just don’t have any hope left.

In the middle of deep and encompassing pain, it can be easy to forget how utterly loved we really are by the God of the universe.

We hear it so often – God loves you. Jesus loves you. Yeah, yeah.

Pretend you are hearing it for the first time.

Pretend there is no God, for a moment. Let that idea hit the bottom of your heart like a rock. Then read slowly and soak up this truth in a new way:

There is a God who made

and then decided that it was all

The God of the universe, Maker of oceans and stars

Loves you like a father loves his child. Loves you like an artist loves his life’s work. Loves you better than anyone who ever loved anyone. Loves you like a willing crucifixion.

I long for those words to reach as deeply down into my starving soul as they used to. If we understood their wideness and their surety, we would never, no never, run out of hope. But for now, with our limited human understanding, we are left wrestling with the truth of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and the lie that our sins are too big and too complicated for Him to wash clean. Daughter of the King, listen close: there is nothing He cannot fix.

When you forget, let me remind you: even in the middle of your deepest darkness, He is in love with you.

Sometimes all you can do is look up. Sometimes you don’t have any hope and all you can do is just ask for it. Sometimes you forget that you are valuable to God and He has promised you healing. Ask Him to remind you, and let His faithfulness stoke the fire of your faith. And when you forget: gosh, He loves you so very much. You are safe with Him. Soak up all this grace. You’re okay. It will all be okay.
